Medieval University City Krems

Krems is the eastern gateway to the Wachau Valley, one of Europe’s loveliest river landscapes with a long viticultural tradition. Surrounded by wine terrasses, the city of Krems represents one of the oldest cities in the Lower Austria. The historic townscape is characterized by narrow streets and Medieval squares surrounded by the facades of monasteries, churches, residential houses and the city’s fortress Gozzoburg, the location of the Culinary Wine Tourism Conference 2024. The combination of the historic town center and the picturesque wine terraces, makes Krems one of the most attractive travel destinations in Austria. Over centuries, builders and architects created a unique city character that has been carefully maintained and preserved until today. In 1975, Krems was designated as the model city for historical preservation and in 2000 Krems was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the same time Krems is a lively city characterized by its universities, students and by representing one of Lower Austria’s cultural centres. Students from all over the world study and work here.

They play an essential role for the vitality and flair of the historic town. Krems combines tradition and modern lifestyle and is well known for its cultural richness and hospitality.
